Curly Hair VS Coily Hair VS Wavy hair: What's the difference?

wavy hair vs curly hair

I can understand this because if you search #wavyhair on Instagram, or try to look up curly hair cuts, you’ll come across almost exclusively heat-style wavy hair. Extremely dry by nature, kinky hair can be brittle, so it needs heavy-duty moisture. “Because smaller and curlier curls have more revolutions, they need more hydration so the curls don’t become subjected to breakage,” explains Brown about this frustrating side effect of dryness.

Is wavy hair considered curly or straight?

Try our GH Beauty Lab test winner, Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Complete Anti-Frizz Care Spray, which aced our evaluation for its lightweight formula that also effectively fights frizz. This guide is a great starting point for finding the curl type that best resembles yours (note that this list omits type 1, as it refers to straight hair). To find out, you may want to sacrifice a few hair strands by plucking them out off your head while hair is still wet. Lay them flat against a white surface and watch them take their natural shape while they air-dry. You may identify with a few different patterns, as all hair doesn't necessarily contain the same type of curl consistently throughout.

I know some are confused about the differences between wavy and curly hair. I thought I would try to explain in a way that makes the most sense to me. When I first started suspecting my hair may not be straight, I thought it might be curly. When I followed the curly girl method, people asked me if I curled my hair. Type 3 curly hair can range from loose, buoyant loops to tight, springy corkscrews which have some sheen but are prone to frizz. Unlike other bars on our list, this bar is meant for both your hair and body.

wavy hair vs curly hair

Curls and waves are not exclusive to each other, and there seems to be only a difference of intensity in the curls. This hair type lies flatter at the crown with defined S-shape waves starting from the mid-length. Strands are thicker in diameter than a 2A, and you'll have to put a bit more elbow grease into getting it straight. The sub-classifications of A to C are based on the width or diameter of your wave, curl, or coil. Type As have a wider pattern size, Type Bs medium, and Type Cs the smallest of the three. 3A curls are known as some of the easiest types of curls to manage and with the right products, might not even require much styling.

How to tell if your hair is wavy or curly

This is why your hair may look shiny when it’s straight but dull when curly. Frizz is caused by the hair’s cuticle (the outermost layer) lifting away from the shaft, allowing moisture and humidity to get in and make the hair swell. Wavy and curly hair is more prone to frizz because of the natural bends in the hair shaft, making it more likely for the cuticle to lift. Curly hair makes a full 360-degree spiral around, forming a complete circle where it twists. Tighter waves can create loose spirals or corkscrews, but won’t complete a full circle at the same height.

Use a lightweight styling product

This is especially true if your hair has waves but has gotten damaged from chemical treatments. The argument is that curly hair is already fragile enough and doesn’t need the help of a drying agent such as shampoo, which further strips the hair of essential oils. She also encourages women with textured hair to use a diffuser when they blow-dry their hair. Knowing the type of textured hair you have allows you to understand your curl pattern better. These types are Type 2 (wavy), Type 3 (curly), and Type 4 (coily).

This type of comb will help reduce the amount of breakage that occurs when you are detangling your hair. If you’ve got wavy hair and are looking for more wavy hair care info, check out my blog post directory. To see examples of 2a, 2b and 2c waves check out my wavy hair pattern chart blog post.

Since wavy hair is often so misunderstood, it can be difficult to determine which strands are wavy, and which are actually curly. As Emily points out, wavy hair is actually pretty popular right now, and many stylists will curl a client’s hair with a hot tool, then brush it out. This can make it a bit tough when looking for examples of naturally wavy hair online for an example. To minimize any damage, use shampoos and conditioners that are rich with moisturizing agents and gently pat hair dry without excessive rubbing. Try Herbal Essences Bio Renew Hydrate Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner, as this duo provided the highest level of conditioning in our Beauty Lab’s test of moisturizing formulas. However, these rules can get confusing when you see someone with wavy hair straight from the root and a curly-haired person with curls starting near the bottom.

These are just the experiences of many that have both hair types, that have shared their experiences online and via forums, and so on. Each person’s hair type is different and may not correspond to the generalizations above. If you were to do this, your curls will become frizzy or come undone. If you need to freshen your curls up, adding hairspray or mousse to some flatter sections may work for you. Wavy hair can appear to be ringlets, but ultimately they will settle into an “S” shape instead of tight curls. Nonetheless, the rule of thumb will come back to whether or not the curl pattern does a full spin or only goes from side to side to determine whether the hair is curly or wavy.

While many may confuse the difference between hair textures, referring to anything that is not bone straight as "curly" is not always accurate. In fact, wavy hair often gets overlooked as its own separate entity. Since this type is usually frizzier than Type 2A, lightly formulated leave-in conditioners that coat the strands during humid days can add extra protection and keep the waves intact. Try Orlando Pita Well Behaved Anti-Frizz Cream Serum, the winner of the GH Beauty Lab's anti-frizz styling products test. Beyond the ingredients of shampoos, our bodies can play a role in how dry or oily hair can get over time. Ahead, find expert-approved selects that will have your curls looking vivacious again.

Like your straight hair friends, once they skip a day of washing their hair, their hair goes flat and boring. One does not need to analyze hair in a laboratory to declare if a person has curly hair. This is because one can instantly feel the difference if a person with curly hair weave is standing in front, especially if one happens to have straight hair.

It has small, tight, zigzag curls that can wrap around a chopstick. Type 4A coils zigzag from the roots of the hair down to the ends of the hair. Now that you have an idea of what textured hair is, you’re probably wondering what curl pattern means.

Its strands are slightly smaller in width than 3A, which makes your hair look fuller. Type 2C hair is thick and can be frizzy when the weather is damp. If you have more defined waves or even ringlets, you probably have Type 2C hair. Type 2C hair has a slightly more coarse texture than the previous types in its family. A wavy head of hair tends to resemble an S pattern more than a spiral, as the natural wave is much looser. Even though it may seem clear what type of hair someone has at first glance, there are more ways to identify different hair types and the qualities that come with them.

We love the Curlsmith Defrizzion Travel Hair Dryer & Diffuser because it’s great at reducing frizz and big enough for even the fullest head of curls. Dickey recommends using an airy, water-based mousse, like the Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam, to add a bit of oomph at the base, making hair look fluffier and fuller. Apply a curl defining cream or gel to damp hair to enhance curl pattern and hold.

Simply examine the shape of your strands in the mirror once your hair is clean and dry. If your curls look like tight corkscrews or springs, you probably have type 3C hair. Type 3C hair has the thickest strands and tightest curls of the Type 3 bunch. Type 3C hair also has a lot of volume and bounce because of the springiness of its curls.

What’s The Difference Between Wavy And Curly Hair

This blog is where I share what I’ve learned, in hopes of helping others. Many people with wavy hair prefer to follow the curly girl method but with a few modifications. Very few people with wavy hair will follow the strictest form of the curly girl method. Many core principles of the curly girl method work well for wavy hair, but some do not.

Understanding Your Hair Type

Wavy hair follicles have a disk shape, while curly hair is created by a flat, oval-shaped follicle. This is the straightest of the wavy hair types, so it tends to lack volume. Avoid excessive heat styling and opt for air drying whenever possible. If you’re in a hurry, gently scrunch your curls with a towel to speed up the process. You may also use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner designed for your hair type to nourish and help retain moisture. While it adds personality and uniqueness to your look, it can also be quite challenging to style.

A terrifically gentle shampoo that works for all curl types is the curl-enhancing Twisted Elastic Cleanser and Detangler. Its nutrient-rich formulation boasts moisture-boosting marine extracts, making it a nourishing yet mild option. FYI, sulfates are among the toxic ingredients you might be using every day, so definitely make sure to read product labels. The right shampoo for your hair type can help with that, setting you up for success by creating a strong baseline foundation to style and manage. As no two curls are the same, we asked four renowned hairstylists for their favorite shampoos for every curly hair type, so you’ll never have a bad hair day again.

I commonly see people posting asking if curl clumps like the one pictured above is a wave or a curl. Or sometimes I see wavies posting that they are so excited that they got a curl, and post a photo like this. There are a few advantages of using a shampoo bar instead of a packaged bottled shampoo.

The curly hair gene isn’t completely dominant, which means it can remain dormant until activated. This can happen if you have a parent or grandparent with curly hair. When the gene is activated, it changes the shape of the hair follicle, which then changes the hair that grows from it. However, I think people with wavy hair generally get healthier hair if they treat it closer to how you would treat curly hair, than straight hair. For example, wavy hair typically doesn’t do well with being brushed or combed regularly like you would do for straight hair. “Curly” is a label that is sometimes used to describe all textured hair (wavy, curly and coily), and sometimes is used to describe a subset of textured hair.

Hair gels can help keep your curls in place while also protecting them from frizz. If you're looking for a hair gel that is effective for managing this hair type, consider using the Curlsmith Shine Gel. Made from rare natural ingredients, this product is sure to work wonders on your 3C hair type. Textures with 4C curls are similar to 4Bs, but the tightly coiled strands are more fragile and have a very tight zigzag pattern that is sometimes indiscernible to the eye. This hair type experiences the greatest amount of shrinkage—about 75% or more—compared to the other textures.

The Difference Between Wavy and Curly Hair

As we previously mentioned, the waves in wavy hair are looser and only slightly curl but do not complete a full circle, whereas curly hair is more coily and naturally completes a full spiral. Curly hair resembles a spiral shape, making a 360-degree circle and twisting from the root. Depending on the type of curl, your hair may be kinky, coily, or ringlet-shaped.

It also features a healthy does of lemon tea tree oil to help soothe itchy, irritated scalps. This gentle, sulfate-free shampoo is specially designed to remove hard-water deposits from the hair, leaving you with squeaky clean hair and enhanced curls. Here are the best shampoos for every type of curl and styling need.

Watson is your man if you're ever in Alaska and need a haircut. He has worked at Northern Lights Barber Shop and developed a following among locals, thanks to his unique styling techniques. If you have low porosity hair, your strand should float at the top of the water. If you have normal porosity hair, the strand will slowly sink to the cup's bottom.

Those with type 3a hair should use a simple, lightweight leave-in conditioner for hydrating and smoothing. Look for natural ingredients like chia seed and linseed extract to enhance and define your natural curls. These attributes are also what make Type 2c waves the most prone to frizz, so it’s important to combine both moisture and hold when it comes to styling products.

“Velcro rollers are more to maintain volume and use during blow-drying to ‘set’ the style or maintain volume to each section,” Trygstad says. Big hair clips are a fun and versatile accessory that can add a touch of glamour to any outfit. They can be used to hold your hair in place, add a touch of style, or make a statement. The Kitsch – Metal Hair Clip is much too small in length and prong size for thick hair. While it’s made very well and durable (it easily passed our durability tests), it was difficult to use on our thick and wavy hair. At three inches long, we could only use the Kitsch for half-up styles, but it would eventually slip after 10 minutes of walking around due to the weight of the metal. These claws come in a pack of four and retail for around $4 per claw–making them very affordable. There are also many colors to choose from, no matter what style you prefer. After months of testing claws for thick hair, we picked the Faebaty claw clips the most often when running errands or even going to parties because they perfectly hold up thick hair and look stylish.

When we tried styling our thick hair into the clip, it barely held on and would often fall off within 5 minutes. It worked better for half-up styling, but it was incredibly uncomfortable to wear. The metal itself had a lot of imperfections along the edges and would often scrape our scalps when styling and wearing the clip.

For example, some popular styles are the rectangle-shaped clip, butterfly shape, and octopus-shaped clip. However, this is best for half-up hair do’s because it’s too small to hold an entire head of thick hair securely. The Revlon – Strong Hold hair clips feature two layers of prongs and are made of plastic.

We also tested working out with these clips by walking and running for several minutes with our hair in buns on top of our heads and pulling our hair back with the claw clip. Each of these user experience tests gave us a score out of 10, and the higher the score, the more comfortable and easy it was to use the clip. The claw size is important to consider when you have thick hair.

This will help prevent them from getting dirty and damaged. You can do this by gently brushing the clips with a soft-bristled brush or by using a lint roller. The latter is a solid material that can bend without breaking and is known for its sustainability. Cellulose acetate can break down into cellulose and acetic acid. We were very surprised at how much pressure and twisting we could apply to these claw clips without cracking. Close-up of a young man holding a smartphone with the Great Clips app open.

So you need to maneuver the hair and prongs to fit the rounded and flattened shape of the claw. The result is a very tight bun, but it does feel awkward putting your hair up at first. Growing up, we were used to plastic claw clips and understood they had a limited life span. Nowadays, more durable materials are available, like acrylic and celluloid acetate.

So after placing the claw onto our hair, we sometimes needed to press the prongs together to ensure the claw was securely in place. Albeit, the Kov Essentials spring is still adequately strong enough to hold up all of the thick hairstyles we tested–even our tester with thick, four feet long hair had no issue using this claw clip. We also tested each claw clip on user experience and how well it securely held all of our thick hair–especially if it was comfortable to wear. We ran basic “shake” tests by wearing the clips and shaking the head repeatedly to see if it would fall out.

However, the plastic material wasn’t strong enough to withstand bending, twisting, or throwing. The Kov Essentials clip is made of cellulose acetate, which means it’s almost indestructible. Kov Essentials states on its website that if your clips bend over time, you can reset the clip by placing it in hot water. The Kov Essentials – Daily Clip is our largest (1.5 x 5.25 inches) and one of the most popular claw clips we tested. Compared to the Faelbaty clips, the Kov Essentials is larger because it has an open rectangle design.

While some of these tests are extreme, many popular brands on social media platforms often market their indestructibility, and we wanted to test to see if it’s a marketing scheme. The higher the quality, the higher the score towards 10. Our top pick is the Faelbaty – Butterfly Claw Clips because they were sturdy and elegantly designed to comfortably hold up even the thickest hair without feeling bulky. The popular Kov Essentials – Daily Clip in the extra large size is our luxury pick because it’s almost indestructible and easily fits the thickest hair. If you’re looking for a clip to wear during workouts that won’t fall off, we recommend the Camila Paris – AD718 because its extra-long, overlapping prongs securely hold hair during any movements.

These videos featured users driving (with a car!) over a Teleties claw clip, and they easily survived. Teleties states that their nylon material is meant to bend and flex for everyday use. It wasn’t too tough to open, but strong enough to hold our hair without falling when working out or even during our head-shaking tests. Here is a selection of four-star and five-star reviews from customers who were delighted with the products they found in this category. Etsy is no longer supporting older versions of your web browser in order to ensure that user data remains secure.

Conair Magnetic Rollers

At $14 per claw clip, it was one of the more expensive brands, but with its durability and overall fit, we recommend this for even the thickest hair. Although they aren't actually magnetic, they're so named because they easily adhere to damp or dry hair (like a magnet), while the vents allow for quick drying. This set contains a whopping 54 rollers—plus 20 clips and a comb—all for less than $15. This set of five jumbo hot rollers is convenient for home and travel alike, and great for longer hair. But if that won’t quite cut it, you can also choose from options with additional rollers.

How we tested

And one thing that never fails us is the classic hair roller. Most importantly, remember that rollers are always used on dry hair—especially hot rollers. “You should wrap the ends of the hair around the roller and roll them to the root,” Trygstad says. While this could work for thinner hair, we wouldn’t recommend it for those who have thick hair because it will fall off quickly, even with half-up styles. The Tocess clips are made of plastic, so they’re more fragile than other brands, which we found out quickly during our throwing tests.

The 11 clips we tested on thick hair

It is important to use hair clips sparingly and to use gentle techniques when removing them. It is also important to clean and disinfect the hair clips regularly. Hair accessories have been a styling staple for many generations.

The clip’s handle chipped off at two throws, making it unusable. Luckily the pack comes with three other clips, and now we know not to throw them around too rough. Found something you love but want to make it even more uniquely you? Many sellers on Etsy offer personalized, made-to-order items. Feel confident that you'll get the same haircut from any Great Clips stylist, every time.

The fit of these clips was adequate on thick hair, and it’s shaped with a clam-shell or baguette design. They stayed on during rigorous workouts (however, they slipped during our head-shaking tests) and were comfortable on our scalps. Each Canitor claw is made of high-quality acrylic and passed our durability tests.

Big hair clips are a fun way to dress up a simple hairstyle. They come in a tortoise shell pattern of two colors and are great for going out on the town because they’re super cute. This claw offers the most secure hold on thick hair, but there are some caveats. For example, the combination of a 3.5-inch body length with extra long prongs makes it harder to wrap around buns or twisted buns.

big hair clips

As for which size roller to use, the stylist recommends getting a set with different ones so you can find the right shape for your length and desired style. “Larger rollers will create less volume, while smaller will create more volume,” he says. Big hair clips are a playful way to add personality to your hair. Big hair clips are a great way to stand out from the crowd. The Bouniq – Mini Claw clips come in a pack of four and are reasonably priced at $3.25 per clip. While these are too small for fitting all our thick hair all at once, they are great for mini buns or half updos to get your hair out of your face.

But if you’ve got extra thick AND long strands, this upgrade is worth it because the Kov Essentials Daily Clip in extra large effortlessly holds up the thickest of hair comfortably. All Kov Essentials come with a 6-month warranty, so these products are durable but also have a guarantee. Most importantly, we liked how much tension was on the springs of each claw.

These are the smallest clips we tested at three inches in length. We’ve used Revlon hair products for over 30 years and wanted to see if these held up to our thick and coarse hair. We picked claw clips that were trending on popular social media platforms along with dupes or other more affordable claw clips that were rated highly on the internet. We tried to pick clips of different designs, patterns, sizes, and materials to test if they worked on thicker hair types.

16 Best Layered Haircuts For Every Hair Type & Length

layer cut for long hair

With thick hair, chunky, swoopy layers will help prevent your locks from looking weighed down. Instead, your hair will seem weightless and perfectly shaped. For a striking down-do, create a soft middle part and blow dry your hair, focusing on the ends. Add more volume to the crown by lightly teasing it, and set the curls with some strong hold hairspray.

Bouncy Layers for Curly Hair

Look at this hair makeover with a cascade of long v-cut layers using the step-cutting technique. Trendy long layered tresses like this v-cut on long hair add dimension and body, which is perfect for women with thinner hair. Trying out long layers for your straight hair is perfect if you have one-length locks. If you have medium or thick hair, these voluminous layers will flatter your face and add shape. I’d like you to please bring this reference photo to your hair salon to get a stylish layered look.

Blonde Textured Cut with Angled Layers

While this long haircut has front layers very similar to those we’ve seen above, it’s styled in a completely different way. I love all the 90’s style blowouts, but this beachy wave is always a staple style. This is a great representation of how you can explain to your stylist where you’d like to see the bulk of your layering. Here, you can see that we took the layering fairly short in the back. The great thing about haircuts is they can be modified and customized for each individual.

Messy Long Layers Vs. Romantic Long Layers

The point where your layers begin will attract the eye, so use this to your advantage by drawing attention to your favorite features. While we have no doubts that long layers are a great option, we understand some of your hesitations. For starters, it takes some time to grow out, and you may be worried that your blowout won’t look as polished as it does with your blunt chop.

This haircut features front layers styled in an effortless, textured way. If you want to cut those swooping front layers but want to cut down a bit on styling time, this would be a great look. If you’re into long hairstyles with face-framing layers, you’ve got plenty of options, and this wavy layered hairstyle is one of them. Get layers of different lengths and highlight them with a beautiful blonde shade to complement your brown hair and add texture to it.

Messy Layered Cut for Fine Hair

With a fiery red mane like Christina Hendricks, it would seem that any cut or style would look good against this color canvas. Her loose, romantic curls are feminine, sophisticated, and can be achieved with retro rollers. This choppy shag with face-framing layers is pure rock and roll but with a feminine flair. "To style this effortless look daily, use Virtue Texturizing Spray ($40) to add definition and movement," says Abergel. January Jones looks California cool with her wavy blonde mane and long, wispy bangs that evoke brushstrokes.

Cutting All-Over Shaggy Layers in Your Hair

Long, natural ringlets are all the more luxurious when trimmed and tended. A face-framing cut and removal of any frayed ends ensures that your curls will have the gloss and bounce you desire. Mullets in their many guises remain a major part of the conversation. This entirely of-the-moment mullet combines micro fringe, a pixie chop at the crown, and long, wolfish layers designed to curl and cascade. To firmly hold hair in place, we will be needing some hair clips and a good quality comb to properly straighten the hair. If you are after some premium hair cutting accessories, Hanzo has you covered there as well.

#41: Layered Loose Waves with Textured Bangs

Then, to maintain that messy look, spritz on a texture-enhancing hairspray like Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray ($49). If your hair is naturally wavy, a few well-placed layers can help give naturally unruly hair some shape. Otherwise, they can help add much-needed volume and oomph to fine hair.

Choppy Layers

This modern take on a layered haircut is perfect for those with medium to thick hair texture. Especially those who want to frame their face and avoid bulkiness near the crown. Try L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni Art Pli Thermo-Modelling Spray. Then blow dry with a round brush for more control over your layers. Finish by misting hairspray like Redken’s Brushable Hairspray.

layer cut for long hair

To achieve volume at the roots, over direct your round brush upward for maximum bounce. Touch up the ends using a big curling iron or a blow drier and a round brush. Set everything with some texture spray or a light-weight shine product. You can throw your hair up in a bun when you’re running late, or keep it straight and simple. If your tresses are naturally straight, use a deep conditioner and let them air dry after washing. If your hair is on the curly side, blow dry it using a large, round brush.

Long layered hair is the opposite of long blunt-cut hair, where the length of the hair is cut uniformly without shorter pieces throughout. Long layered hair with bangs is a popular trend that looks wonderful on long, straight to wavy textures. When cutting the hair short, curls have a tendency to spring upwards into a voluminous fringe.

Try a long curtain bang for added movement around your face. Adding textured angles is a great way to show off your blonde locks. This layered haircut captures the essence of beach blonde hair that gives an easy-going yet chic vibe. The light, sun-kissed color complements the relaxed, tousled, layered waves. Curls add a whole new dimension to long layered hair styles, and we really love how layers can help tame and shape curls to perfection.

One of the best ways to accent your features is to add face-framing layers to your long hairstyle. The angles hitting the chin add movement and interest around your face. Try round brushing or curling your shorter pieces away from your face if you can. A jet black long layered haircut for long hair looks gorgeous on women with darker skin and extra-long hair.

The gentle blend of highlights creates an almost ethereal frame for the face, while the layers add movement and life. With so many types of layers and layering techniques to choose from, long hair never has to be boring, heavy, or limp. You can add layers to pump up the volume, give your mane movement and swing, remove bulk and weight, and add texture to keep your style lively. The right layers can make it easy to air-dry your hair into a pretty style with plenty of texture and movement. When considering long layered haircuts, it’s essential to decide how much blending you want within your layers. Choosing a delicious shade for highlights, like caramel or honey blonde, will help draw even more attention to your cute layers.

You can accomplish this easily without a ton of obvious layers by going for face-framing layers in the front and short, stacked layers near the ends. These layers begin below the jawline to keep the top thick and full, adding some nice balance and shape to the ends of the style. You’re creating a lot of shape and movement with graduated layers cut from around the jawline to the ends in a seamless, gradual fashion. For a more retro feel, try shorter, wispy strands in the front and longer ones in the back. This look has a major seventies vibe bonus for someone trying to grow out their bangs.

Shorter lengths throughout the hairstyle characterize a layered haircut. The layers are blended into your ends, so there isn’t a choppy line between the two. (Source)There are quite a few ways to cut layers, which I’ll get into shortly. The one thing all layers have in common is that they don’t add volume.

These 22 Long, Layered Haircuts Are Giving Us Hair Envy

Pairing them with piece-y bangs is a beautiful option. The wavy layer softness and flowy texture along with these minimal bangs get your face shape enhanced, especially square shaped face. Bored with the normal highlights and natural color of your bangs? This blue color addition will make your hairstyle attractive and it will provide your face a unique and cool look. Go for this fashionable haircut of waterfall bangs and butterfly layers for your long hair. It is one of the most endearing and pretty haircuts out there.

#75: Layered Hair with Beach Waves for Over 40

If you have straight or loose wavy hair, try a U-shaped cut that allows your layers to fall perfectly. When you want to add a beachy feel to your long layered hair, upgrade it with long feathered layers and blonde highlights added to your naturally dark roots. Curling the tresses of thin hair, while layering the waves, lets your stylist create a haircut that generates movement and bounce. The medium brown color with a golden balayage also adds depth and volume to the sleekest of hair. When considering a new haircut, analyze your face shape. Consider a long, shaggy bob with choppy layers for round faces.

Wavy Layered Hair with Face-Framing Highlights

Here is another style to convince you to stick to long layered hair when choosing your next haircut. Cut long layers and add some smartly placed highlights. You may also make an impression of slightly bouncing waves if you curl the ends a bit.

Lovely Layers for Soft Curls

Long layered hair with beach waves for over 40 is an example of layered haircut ideas to explore. Long hair tends to give a conservative look to women over 40. Offer modernity to your cut by introducing it with bright hair hues.

Wispy bangs

Luscious, long locks like these are practically begging for a blowout. Learning how to style hair this long takes determination, practice, and patience. Go to the salon and ask for a blowout, then carefully watch everything the stylist does. Then, invest in a powerful blow dryer, a large, round brush, and a straightener. Your thick, lush hair looks gorgeous when it’s worn with layers.

#14: Textured Haircut with Layers and Beach Waves

If you are planning to go for the side part, you need to leave a fair bit of length to ensure your bangs blend in with the rest of the hair. Long side bangs give you a little edge and mystery, so you’re not laying all your cards on the table. Your bangs should vary as much in length to your layers as the layers do to each other. There are no rules when it comes to how you wear your fringe.

Wispy Bangs for Fine Hair

If you don’t like the pin-straight look, go for the undone look. The long voluminous layers paired up with a simple side-swept fringe. The classic long straight layered looks get an update with a bold, sharp fringe. Gabrielle Union's hair is showstopping in this long braided look. This protective style is at once polished and defined, while also being casual and cool thanks to its varying lengths and undone ends.

This hairstyle goes well to make your shape look more thin and elongated. To get a more precise look, parted bangs come in and leave a beautiful impact on the hairstyle. Experimenting with your long hair with wavy layers and blunt bangs is great. It enhances your face beauty even more if you make the wavy layers a bit messy. Blunt bangs and wavy layers together show volume and thickness in your hairstyle. If you don't want to go with a long haircut, you can also opt for a medium length haircut as it will look equaly good too.

How to Maintain Your New Blunt Bangs

Accentuating the bold layering around your face will take your simple blowout to another level of appeal. You can choose a middle part to make your look complete. Razored long layers with a face frame is a hairstyle you can always go right with.

Long flipped-up layers are one of the most flattering hairstyles for long hair. Adding longer layers to your long hair will allow you to pull it back or wear it down and styled. With super long hair, you’ll want to have your stylist blend your layers into your hair without removing much weight from your ends.

Two-toned layers added to your extra-long hair are a fantastic way to show off your long length. Adding a lighter color on the top of your head gives you the illusion of longer hair. Keeping the underneath darker saves money, keeps your hair healthy, and keeps the dimension in your hair. Adding long layers also adds to the illusion of length, giving the eye different points of interest.

If you love fun colors, a bright pink ombre is a must try in long layered hair. Fill the body of your mane with luscious curls or waves, and pair it with straightened fringe. For a fabulous hairstyle for a wedding, form a thick low braided ponytail with long layered hair. The blonde hair color and pieces of colorful flowers combine to make an Elsa braid. The different layer lengths work best on thicker textures. Go ahead and add a texturizing spray for even more volume.

The volume will also differentiate your layers even more and make them more noticeable. Cutting in a few long wispy side bangs is great for having just a little something there to break up a prominent forehead. Curtain bangs don’t even have to look like bangs at all.

For a sexy touch, go for tousled bangs by teasing them and curling the ends backward. Some simply can’t surpass a “genetic length”, others struggle with brittleness, and sometimes, long hair can just be a burden — it is literally heavy. If you’re in the last group, layered cuts are the best solution. You can grow your hair to envious lengths without the heaviness that all that hair carries with it. Meet Mary Allen, a writer at The Right Hairstyles Magazine with a passion for the artistry of hair, who first joined our editorial team in January 2022. Long hair with barrel curls and dramatic bangs that swoop to the side give this cut a vintage feel that screams old Hollywood.

The low drop fade creates a neat, sleek look that contrasts against the textured length for a fun-loving style with structure. Men with natural waves can fashion the front sections to the side to create a makeshift fringe and spike the back section for a high-volume finish. A burst fade mullet puts a popular dapper spin on a contemporary cut. Make this fast-absorbing finishing oil the final step of your styling routine. Just a few drops help to smooth and fight static while also adding mirror-like shine—for all curl types. The sideburns are trimmed up to the top of the ear for a cleaner look in the front. Enhance the top and back by keeping the hair longer and with dimension. Curly mullets not only look amazing when kept loose but also when pinned in a bun or a pony, on top of the head.
