Lyle School of Engineering offers a BS in Computer Science with a Game Development Track. Students interested in this track must be admitted to the Professional Certificate Program in Digital Game Development at The Guildhall—SMU’s School of Video Game Development (est. 2003). The Certificate is “tailored to students who wish to become actively involved in the game development industry as designers or artists,” says the school. The game programs are part of an institute-wide initiative designed to advance the game community through interdisciplinary research, funding opportunities, tech transfer and expansion of industry collaborations.

Since the average program requires 8 semesters to complete, you’re looking at nearly $100,000 in tuition fees by the time you graduate. Students in this 132 credit hour program are required to take courses through the College’s Humanities and Sciences and Integrated Studies Departments, as well as Portfolio and Career Preparation. Individual and Advanced Game Projects courses are part of the program as well as a Grad Show Preparation. Founded in 1820 as The Seminary, Indiana University Bloomington (IU Bloomington) became Indiana College in 1828 and Indiana University in 1838.

The BADAS Program requires 120 credit hours of study and successful completion of the final DAS project. The UF MiDAS Program explores game engines and development, software and hardware integration, design and interactivity, emerging technologies such as AR/VR, and proposals, project management, and production pipelines. The MiDAS program is offered in an accelerated format, so it takes just one year to complete. The school serves approximately 10,815 students enrolled more than 120 degree and diploma programs across six colleges and schools, including Parsons Paris. The school now has over 40,000 enrolled students and offers two distinct paths for aspiring game designers to travel. Firstly, it gives students a firm understanding of computer programming while also offering an introduction to the art, narrative, digital media, and music side of games. Courses focus on areas such as fine arts and theory while requiring projects based on actual production pipelines and environments you’d find in an active game studio. Among the skills, students will obtain are 2D computer graphics, scripting, animation, texture, lighting, and 3D modeling. The Games Concentration teaches students how to produce 2D and 3D images and concepts for video games.

And finally, students who are interested in the business side of game development or who would like to launch their own studios, can enroll in the BS in Business Program, housed in the MIT Sloan School of Management. For both options, students may work with the MIT Game Lab to customize a focus area that aligns with their goals. Seminars, game development and research studios, and independent study are also part of the programs. RIT IGM Game Design and Development students will also have the rare opportunity to complete two paid blocks of cooperative education, which will allow them to gain experience in the games industry through a full-time employment at a studio. Google, Cartoon Network, Electronic Arts (EA), Sony Interactive Entertainment, Epic Games, and Microsoft are just a few recent co-op companies. Students will also have the opportunity to develop and commodify their own games at RIT’s MAGIC Spell Studios.
